Five years ago, I was sitting at a police cookout in the Netherlands when a Dutch cop asked me if I wanted a joint, a beer, or a hot dog. Four years ago, I was celebrating Tet for a week in a bamboo stilt house somewhere near the border of Laos and Vietnam. Three years ago, I was sitting on a wooden bench nailed to a platform attached to a motorbike whizzing through the jungle on a railroad track listening closely for the sound of oncoming trains. Two years ago, I was navigating the pitch-black halls of Japanese warships 150 feet below the surface of the South China Sea.
